The Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling

It's really strange to enjoy a book and only like, maybe, one character out of a good twenty. Andrew was the only one who seemed sane and innocent. I felt sorry for Krystal, but I didn't particularly like her. Fats was so busy being 'authentic' that he didn't realise things were going to end badly for him.

The thing I did like was that Rowling had a couple of teenagers teach the adults a lesson by using their ICT skills and hacking into the Parish Council website.

Obviously it didn't end with a positive conclusion where Ruth refused to keep getting beatings from her husband and shopped him to the police, or Howard got better and left Shirley for Maureen, leaving Shirley the complete opposite of what she desired, as a laughing stock.

I enjoyed the book but it was very strange after reading the Harry Potter series because the extreme adult content was quite a shock. Rowling went from writing YA about a boy wizard to writing about junkies, lies, death, and a hell of a lot of swearing. I'm looking forward to seeing it come alive for the small screen now.
