The Thursday Murder Club (Thursday Murder Club #1) by Richard Osman
Hardback 400 pages - First Published 2020

Four residents of a retirement village with no other common interests start a club about murder and soon find themselves involved in an active murder investigation which could get them in a lot of trouble.

First off, I just want to say that I absolutely adored this book. It was continuously funny throughout and had a very interesting plot not really seen much since the Miss Marple Mysteries. Richard Osman is a naturally funny person and this book reflected this. Even when it was just mundane moments like a new resident not knowing when the bin days are, it just made me cackle.

All of the characters are different in their own ways but they all come together perfectly. Elizabeth, the fearless leader of the group, has an obviously shady past and knows how to get what she wants; whether it's someone owing her a favour or just dodging getting arrested, she is the stand-out character for me. She's got hidden depth, that she only discusses with her comatose ex-police friend, and she is witty and cunning. Joyce is a retired and widowed nurse who is extremely sweet but enjoys being dragged along by Elizabeth, and is thrilled by the prospect of being arrested. Ibrahim is a psychiatrist with a love of Yoga. Not much is said about him so I'm looking forward to learning more further in the series. Ron is a trouble-maker through and through but knows he's getting too old for it now, but he does anything to keep up the pretence. I think he will be a very interesting character going forward.

I won't go into detail about any other characters for fear that I may give something away so I will just say this: this book will make you laugh, it'll make you think, and it'll make you a little sad but I promise that if you like a Cosy Murder Mystery then it won't make you disappointed.

A huge 5 stars for Mr Osman, and a plea for the next book soon ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
